The first time I found myself exulting in the beauty of nature was when I returned from a trek to Dodi Tal with my father at the impressionable age of 14 years. It is then that I realized that I could appreciate, respect and understand nature and all the precious gifts it has to offer to us. This could be because I come from a family of nature lovers or exposure to nature from a very tender age.
The realization that nature was a precious gift inspired me to join the Adventure Course conducted by Ms Chandra Prabha Aitwal (a well-known mountaineer) in 1984, which taught me to overcome the difficulties and appreciate the beauty of nature. This was also the beginning of my journey and inspiration to becoming a successful mountaineer and trekker. When I grew older I realized just how fortunate I was to be born in the Himalayas.
I completed Adventure Course, Basic Course, Advance Course, Search and Rescue, Instructor, Mountain Instructor, Guide and Liaison Courses conducted by Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi. On graduating from NIM, my instructor asked me what I would do in future, my instant reply was that I would like to do anything connected to the tourism industry. While working as porter, then instructor, guide and escort for a large trekking company, I gained the confidence that I could make a career for myself in this industry.
My father was a farsighted man; he saw my enthusiasm and interest in the field and encouraged me to convert our family home into a guest house. It was in the year 1992 that our family home became Monal Tourist Home. The name Monal comes from a very beautiful bird found in this area, it is also the state bird of Uttarakhand. Today, I am absolutely certain that MTH is my university that has made me understand tourism and also taught me so much about the various regions of my own country as well as about other countries of the world. My sources of inspiration are faces from 150 different nationalities that have passed through the portals of MTH. I am deeply indebted to tourists of my own country and of other countries of the world, who have been instrumental in providing me a source of livelihood in the high mountains of Himalayas. This guest house is a major source of strength for me.
